Lands End to John O'Groats Challenge Published on : 03 February 2020 / Categories: General Physical activity has a huge potential to enhance our wellbeing. Even a short burst of 10 minutes’ brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood. Participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and reduce stress and anxiety. It also plays a role in preventing the development of mental health problems and in improving the quality of life for those people experiencing mental health problems. With this in mind the PE department set our students and staff a virtual challenge to travel the distance from Lands End to John O’Groats, 874 miles. Every time a staff member or student took part in exercise, they forwarded evidence to Miss Southward to log against their house to see which house could travel the distance the quickest. After 4 weeks of intense competition, I take great pleasure in announcing Turing as the winner of the LEJO challenge. This is particularly impressive for several reasons. The first being that Turing was 200 miles behind at one stage and less than two weeks ago sitting in 4th position. Miss Wilkinson rallied her troops and her House really did her proud by getting out at every opportunity. So hardcore were Turing that several students went out in the cold and dark conditions and smashed out the last remaining miles as they had got wind of a big push from Jackson house. This kind of dedication embraces everything that is positive about the House system and its essential that this spirit continues going forward. Well done to all staff and students who took part. This was an incredible effort by all. A special thank you to all 4 Heads of Houses for motivating everyone and pushing hard for every mile.
