Students at The Hyndburn Academy provide welcome food donations for local charity.

Last month, ahead of the Christmas break, students at The Hyndburn Academy put their efforts towards delivering food donations to Maundy Relief in Accrington.

Maundy Relief is a local charity intent on addressing the needs of the local community, with its staff and volunteers working together to tackle the deep impact of poverty on some of the most vulnerable people in society. Alongside helping to provide food and shelter, the charity is also committed to offering mental and physical health support to those in need.

In support of their work locally, The Hyndburn Academy’s collection was organised as part of a school house challenge, with the house Mandela taking the lead in points for collecting the most items for those in need. This included tinned items, dry foods and toiletries.

These donations were received gratefully by the charity, who thanked students and staff at the academy for their time and generosity in organising the collection, and went to support families and individuals over the festive period.

At The Hyndburn Academy, houses are named after inspiring individuals who have each changed the course of history through their respective ambition, determination and philanthropy.  Alongside Mandela, the other houses include: Curie, after pioneering Scientist Marie Curie; Jackson in honour of NASA’s first black female engineer, Mary Jackson; and Turing, after by Alan Turing, a famous Mathematician credited with the invention of the computer.

Nicola Palmer, Headteacher at The Hyndburn Academy said:

“It is wonderful to see our students so committed to giving back to the local community following such a difficult two-year period. Supporting local charities such as the Maundy Relief, who remain committed to addressing the impact of poverty and inequality in Accrington, is key to ensuring our students are connected and engaging with the world around them.

“Indeed, house initiative such as these are part of our wider dedication to delivering an Education with Character, through which seek to provide students with the tools to become kind, caring, and active members of society both now and in the future. We look forward to supporting many more such important causes over the course of the academic year.”

Thank you to all our parents, carers, staff and students for their donations.
