Students bring Magic of Oz to Hyndburn

Students bring Magic of Oz to Hyndburn

Students from The Hyndburn Academy brought magic to the stage this month, with a series of spellbinding performances of The Wizard of Oz.

After five months of dedicated rehearsals, students wowed their friends and families with three days’ worth of shows. Bringing to life the famous characters was a fantastic cast of young people from Year 7 right up to Year 11, supported by a diligent team of students backstage.

Each night was packed full, with the whole school community keen to celebrate what the students had managed to achieve. Familiar and best-loved songs such as ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ and ‘Over the Rainbow’ won particularly loud applause. Parents shared how much they had enjoyed the performances in person and on social media – praising students and staff alike.

One parent, Rachel Davidson, said:

“We came to see the show tonight and it was absolutely fantastic – well done to all the pupils and staff. I’m so pleased my daughter is part of such a wonderful school.”

Students also put on three special matinee performances for local primary pupils and their parents. As well as watching the story unfold, these children got to play an active role in the show – learning and performing the jitterbug alongside The Hyndburn Academy students.

Supported by the wider ensemble cast and taking on the lead role of Dorothy was Year 7 Skye Gallagher. She was accompanied by Bradley Graham as Lion, Aimee Ramsbottom as Tin Man and Olivia Burrows-Fielding and Holly Beaghan sharing the role of Scarecrow.

Mason Tattersall Y7 said: "I really enjoyed being part of the show, it has helped me make friends with people out of my friendship circle and helped me settle into secondary school life and I really enjoyed pupils from my primary school coming to watch the show."

The backstage team and sets were just as impressive. All the props were created by students in their enrichment time after school, with the set itself generously donated by parent Mr Fielding. Local company Lancashire Event Supplies, which was set up by former students of the school, kindly provided the lighting, sound and special effects.

Nicola Palmer, Headteacher of The Hyndburn Academy, said:

“I would like to congratulate all our students – from the cast to the backstage team – on another excellent musical performance. It is testament to their hard work and perseverance over many months that they have been able to deliver such a strong series of shows. It is also thanks to the dedication of staff, led by Miss Alcott, that it was all possible in the first place.

“We know just how exciting performing for an audience for the first time can be, so all of our students can be proud of what they achieved. We are pleased to be able to provide opportunities like this for our students to develop in confidence as part of an Education with Character and to be able to share the experience with our local primary schools.”
