Virtual Sports Week at The Hyndburn Academy

Virtual Sports Week at The Hyndburn Academy

Last week, students and staff at The Hyndburn Academy went up against each other in a series of new and innovative sports challenges inspired by National School Sports Week.

National School Sports Week is an annual campaign organised by Youth Sport Trust that celebrates the important role of PE and school sport in enhancing young people’s wellbeing. In light of this year’s unprecedented circumstances, the campaign was adapted to encourage schools and families to participate in activities within the home and engage in virtual, rather than face-to-face, competition.

At The Hyndburn Academy, the week gave students the chance to try their hand at some new physical activities, alongside their usual home learning curriculum. Each day was dedicated to a different activity, designed to get both students and staff moving and to reinforce the benefits of daily exercise. Students were encouraged to record their scores and send them in to the PE department at the end of the week, alongside any photos or videos showcasing their efforts.

Marking the start of the week, Speed Bounce Saturday challenged students to see how many bounces they could complete in 30 seconds over a household item. For Imogen in Year 7, this meant completing as many bounces as she could over a makeshift mini hurdle. For Sock Sunday students were required to complete an active challenge using socks, which saw Jess in Year 9 hold her own “sock-put” competition.

On Mile Monday students completed a mile walk, jog, run or cycle, whilst on Tone Up Tuesday they were encouraged to have a go at some circuit training activities. On day 5 students took part in Wacky Wednesday where they were challenged to create and complete their own obstacle course using household items. Noah in Year 7 tested his football skills by using a set of red cones to create a dribbling obstacle course.

On Throwing Thursday, students took part in a throwing activity of their choosing with many organising throw and catch competitions with members of their family. The final day of the week was Feeling Fit Friday which saw each member of the PE department record their own bespoke fitness challenge for students to try out.

Giving students the opportunity to develop their creativity, take on new challenges and push themselves outside of their comfort zone is all part of The Hyndburn Academy’s commitment to delivering an Education with Character. This means that, alongside equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need to achieve well in the classroom, students are developed into ambitious and resilient young adults.

Hollie Southward, PE teacher at The Hyndburn Academy and organiser of the school’s Virtual Sports Week said:

“At this difficult time, we are committed to ensuring we continue to motivate and inspire all our students to stay active and healthy. Taking part in an exciting week like this was an excellent chance for our students and staff to not only come together as a whole school community but also to join in the national effort to get moving. It was great to see so many of our young people come up with such innovative ideas for their challenges and immerse themselves fully in the week of activities. Well done to everyone who took part.”
