Students at The Hyndburn Academy took part in an engaging ‘Be Internet Citizens’ session, exploring the importance of media literacy and learning how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
The session focused on helping young people recognise and identify misinformation and disinformation, equipping them with the skills to question what they see online, assess the reliability of sources and think critically about the content they encounter on social media and other digital platforms.
In an age when information can be shared instantly, these skills are increasingly important. Understanding the difference between accurate information, misleading content and deliberately false information helps students become more informed, confident and responsible digital citizens.
The session was delivered as part of a wider programme of educational resources developed by YouTube and The Parent Zone, designed to support educators in providing meaningful media literacy education to young people.
Teachers are encouraged to explore the accompanying lesson plans and resources, which can help schools integrate these essential skills into their curriculum.
The session supports The Hyndburn Academy’s commitment to Education with Character, ensuring students develop not only academically but also the knowledge, confidence and critical-thinking skills they need to make informed decisions, both online and in everyday life.
We would like to thank Parent Zone and MP, Sarah Smith for the opportunity to take part in this valuable session and for supporting young people to become safer, more thoughtful and responsible internet users.
